The Benefits of Red Wine
Hi Everyone! Thanks so much for taking time out of your busy schedules to read Analyzing Diets.com. The whole time that I was on the Medifast Diet, I did not take one sip of alcohol, basically because the diet prevented it. I never was the type to like the taste of beer or the hard stuff for that matter, but after reading about the health benefits of red wine, I decided to add that to my diet.
Now I know nothing about wines, but hey there’s no better time than the present to start educating myself about red wine and its health benefits. Now I cannot tell the difference between a good wine or a bad wine, so this will be a learning process for me, as I report what I find out to you.
So is wine really good for you in moderation? The experts say Yes! With it’s alcohol content and non-alcoholic phytochemicals which are natural occurring plant compounds, mostly taken from grape skins, wine has been proven to reduce the risk of heart disease, certain types of cancers and slow down the progression of neurological degenerative disorders, like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson Disease.
But the important thing that you have to keep in mind is the amount consumed, because this matters tremendously. If you drink more than what is recommended then the health benefits go south and the health risks go up. So what is considered safe amounts you ask.
For Men: No more than two drinks per day.
For Women: No more than one drink per day.
And one drink is defined as a 5 ounce glass of red wine.
It is well documented that moderate amounts of alcohol can raise your good cholesterol and thin your blood. This is thought to be one of the primary cardiovascular benefits from wine. Non-alcoholic phytochemicals in wine, such as flavanoids and resveratrol, act as antioxidants and prevent molecules known as “free radicals” from causing cellular damage in the body.
Of course alcohol can have it’s negative sides also, and you should always consult a doctor if you are concerned about the risks. I think that one glass of wine for dinner cannot be bad for someone who is otherwise healthy, and this is my plan to add to my diet. Now I will have to start taste testing and finding out which types and kinds of wine that I might like.
So the next time I go shopping I will choose a bottle to try, and report the results of the taste test to you. Until then see you next time and heres to your health.
