Nutrition Myths

I found some myths having to do with Nutrition, and wanted to share them with you all. This one is kind of funny after my last post about staying hydrated. I have always thought that the old saying of drinking 8 glasses of water a day was the norm in staying fully hydrated. It is really hard to tell how much water you are taking in through food, juice, and other fluids. 8 glasses of water might be a good measure for some, but for others might be too much depending on what other things that they consume. Pay attention to your urine to get a good gauge of where you are at. If it is a pale yellow color, you are fine in the hydration game, and then again if it is a darker yellow, then you are lacking in fluids… Drink Up!

Eating Carbohydrates makes you fat. Have you heard this before? In reality cutting out carbs from your diet will have a short term weight loss, mainly due to water loss from a storage of carbohydrates, but eating carbs in moderation does not directly lead to weight gain. Our bodies use carbs for energy, and by going without them, may lead to being sluggish and lethargic.

All Alcohol is bad for you.. The key word here is moderation once again. Six ounces of wine and 12 ounces of beer are considered moderate amounts. Red wine contains antioxidants and will provide health benefits. So there you are, an excuse to drink a glass of wine a day. Hey the French can’t be wrong, and they have a much smaller heart attack rate than Americans do, even with their higher fat content diets.

A lesson to learn here is just because you hear the same thing over and over, doesn’t always make it true. Until next time, Eat healthy!
